Wednesday's Ruck & Maul

Canada West Vs Canada East U17 Men, (pictured, CW’s Braydon Tate, opposing the put in)

Canada West defeated Canada East at Shawnigan on Sunday by a score of 30 – 12. After opening a 20 – 0 lead, Canada West eased, giving up penalties and letting the Easterners back in the game. The return match goes today at Westhills at 2:00 p.m. As commented by Mark Pratt, the Easterners are playing “out of season” and a closer game is expected today. Vancouver Islanders featured strongly with Velox’s Martin-Feek, Nanaimo’s Lucas De Vries and CW’s Jonah Hall noticeable. De Vries scored a brace, CW’s Brennig Prevost added a single and the following was quoted on the Rugby Canada site;

“The West’s backrow of Michael Smith at blindside, James O’Neill at openside and Jonah Hall at 8 were the standouts in the forwards.  They had a high work rate and were able to cause a lot of problems for the East at the breakdown.  Their strong play allowed the West backline to play front foot ball and spread it wide. The West's standouts in the backs were Logan Martin-Feek at fly half, Mostyn Finlay at 12 and Elias Ergas at 13.”

Successful Fun(d)raiser.

CWRFC held their Annual Fun(d)raiser Dinner at the Victoria Golf Club last Saturday evening. The event was a “full house” with 170 friends, old and new and family and fans assembled to have an evening of hilarity and successful bidding on a variety of silent and open auction items. The evening rounded out with some action at the blackjack tables! In the words of the President, Don Swainson; “The club wishes to thank EVERYBODY who attended, participated and organized this event. It will enable the club to sustain and build for the future. Proceeds will go towards supporting coaching, referee and player clinics and helping to make the game safer and more enjoyable not to mention the ability to keep players’ dues reasonable so the game is accessible to all. Revenue will also support upcoming tours and routine game expenses and help us start new programs such as a women’s team. In short, the evening because of the generosity of those in attendance and your commitment, will help us make a great rugby club, even greater.”
