UVIC Women's Season kicks off this Weekend

CW has strong links to the UVIC Rugby program over the past few decades.  UVIC coaches throughout the seventies and into the nineties all have ties to CW (Ian Mclean, David Docherty and Bruce Howe) and current VIKES men's coach, Doug Tate, have coached his sons in the CW youth programs. In addition, we have fed many players to the program over the years and even seen a few come back to the club.  

This is now true in the female program where one of our CW youth girls graduated from the program last year and has now joined the UVIC Vikes Womens roster.  Frelen Gorst is a Belmont and CW player that is now on the wing for UVIC and will likely see some playing time this coming weekend.

Our female director, Natasha Schigas is a UVIC alumnus,  and we have now  seen players like Laura Crow-Hutchon, Adrienne Shepherd (Paul's daughter), Stef Hanson and others join our new Women's program.   So we wanted to make the CW and broader rugby community aware of the season kickoff for the VIKES women's team this weekend.  It is a program on the rise which is coached by 2 CW women players, Brittany Waters (head coach) and Julianne Zussman (Assistant) and Westshore player/Apotella Founder, Barbara Mervin (assistant).

UVIC Vikes kickoff their season with 2 games this weekend:  

1. vs University of Lethbridge (coached by fmr USA 7s womens coach - Ric Suggitt) at 5:00pm
2. vs Calgary Dinos - Jenny Vincent Memorial game at 11:30am

All games are at Wallace Field at UVIC and admission is by donation.   It is action packed weekend of rugby with the CW home openers.  Get out a support our local University team as well !
