Monday's Musings

Veni, vidi, vici........

Akin to that famed general, Westshore completed a three-sided victory at Oak Bay on Saturday.  I start with kudos to the men’s teams from both clubs for being able to field three teams, with the visitors being blessed with a ‘down-side’ of talent, given their full strength of Premier player availability.  Ne’er-the-less the ‘Thirds’ was played in good spirits and enjoyed by all participants.

Men’s action stayed on field #2 for the Divvies.  CW had to forego several players out of necessity, being “called up” to the top level.  Westshore showed strength of program with a 43 – 7 win.  The BC Div 1 Comp is exciting at the top, as the League schedule winds down.

Westshore Premier teams, when loaded, are a force. And so, it came to pass at Windsor on this day, the fates not aligning once again for CW. It took a mere eight minutes for Westshore Premier women to open the scoring after a forceful run by Emery Britten following prolonged pressure.  The score moved to 12 – 0 after a fifty-meter break by NSWT’s Sevens prospect, Maya Addai. CW responded after a nifty dummy and break by Bella Teasdale and Samek’s support earned the try.  This score remained almost to the half, although, Addai, looking for work, “filled” from her far wing to complete her brace.  CW did apply some late pressure, only to knock on.

When Westshore went ahead early in the second half, matters looked glum.  Their quality lines and foot speed required a response of an organized defensive line, and line speed which had not always been present.  However, at the mid-point the pendulum swung.  The insertion of Remee Brown, her forceful running and don’t argue attitude earned a try, 24 – 10.  Bronwyn Zodichi, also off the bench, was next to add to the push and at 24 – 17 with time left, it appeared to be far from over.  The visitors settled and with good lines and support took it to 29 – 17.  The final Emily Currey try saw CW gain two bonus points in a losing cause, from a very entertaining and well-played match.

For Westshore I give #8, Celia Probe my W-o-M, with other notables being Brooks, Britton, Addai, LeMay and Brent.  For CW I opted for Alex Motherwell as W-o-M with good efforts from Skakum, Beauchemin, Edwards-Challenger, Brown and Zodichi.

In the men’s Premier game, Westshore scored early and often.  This is a talented team at full strength and was simply too much for a smaller and less experienced Tricolours to handle. Humphries did cross at mid-half to make it 14 – 5.  Three more visitor’s tries before “lemons” saw a 33 – 5 scoreline.  The second half saw 36 more Westshore points added.

Not today, Liam.                                                          So, cop this!

To the victors, I give #10 Balaski, my M-o-M.  He confidently dictated the show.   The complete pack with marginal standouts, Kingham and Ndirangu, was overpowering and carried strongly.  Balaski, capably orchestrating the Kenyan connection, and complimented by an enterprising performance from #15, McGuire, were the goods and certainly worthy of their current # 2 table position. For CW, another tough day at the office, with some periods of resistance, however, one-on-one tackling was not up to par.  Some massive eighty minutes from the FRF (‘onyas), whose opposition must have seemed like a colossus and depressing by day’s end!  I give my M-o-M to John Humphries.  In the backs, #9, Wels never shirks and seeks to initiate something, and I could say the same for Pilgrim.  Next week it is an R & R for the Vancouver Sevens, then it will be a road trip to Ravens.  Thanks to today’s officials.

Humphries Senior, keeps an eye on the boy (M-o-M), CW.

FOOTNOTE:
Surprise introduction on Saturday to that same Raven’s, club scribe, Peter MacDonald.  I have always wanted to compliment him on his objective and enjoyable accounts of Raven’s matches.  His work is reminiscent of the late Ben Buan from Meralomas club, a good friend in rugby.  Peter’s son, Roddy ‘Doc’ MacDonald has recently joined our club with a pedigree from Magee H.S., UBC and Cork RFC (IRE).
