MONDAY'S MUSINGS

Saturday, a Rugby Day.
OFF THE PITCH

Some forty plus sponsors and 20 Club members met for lunch on Saturday to celebrate the continued success of CW rugby. Over 150 mini players registered, and a further 300 age grade boys and girls and senior men and women is proof of CW’s commitment to the game and the individual players who take part. The assembled group were made aware of the plans for the purchase of property on Currie Rd and the fact that Oak Bay Municipality has made available the offer of a building that could be moved to that site. A separate Society – the Oak & Palms Sports Club Society has been struck to avoid any conflict of interest, as CWRFC looks towards the future. Finally, a new Platinum sponsor – Straith’s Fine Clothing was welcomed and thanked with memories of Kane Straith recalled.

ON THE PITCH
Matters were not quite as successful, although some magic did occur. CW women’s 1st Division recorded their first-ever win, pipping Nanaimo Hornets, 17 – 5. Reports from the pitch, give a shout out to Val Savchenko, Gianna Felicella and mini rugby and age grade “Pathway Products”, Avalon Crawford and Ella Gallant. There was much joy in Mudville at the post-game festivities. CONGRATULATIONS!
Meanwhile, across town the Premier rivalry between Westshore and CW women continued. Westshore, bolstered by a couple of National squad women raced out to a five-try, 25 – 0 start. CW are to be credited with their tenacity, earning a four-try bonus point, with a 24 – 12 second half performance. COMMISERATIONS!
Back at the House, the men’s Divvies faced the top-of-the-table Hornets. An even battle saw our boys down 5 – 7 at the half. Nanaimo had to dig deep to continue their winning ways, 17 – 12 final with CW earning a bonus point. Although it was a good effort, missing a few players “called up”, chats with some of the players post-game, rued some definite chances for the upset that were let slip away. This line of thinking augers well for the future of this young group, craftily guided by the experience of Hohert, Ilnicki and Crawford. CLOSE!

The main game saw CW going into the fray with a patchwork quilt of availability vs a Capilanos side buoyed by their recent victory over Burnaby. (Ed. – How strange to see a Caps side without Glenn McKinnon!) Unfortunately, this writer only caught snippets of play – some ugly, notably, the inability to compete in the set scrums; some most enjoyable, highlighted by daring attack and opportunistic play from the backs, led by Bowd.
At the end of the day, although winning “table points” escaped the home team, yet another bonus point for four tries was earned. This group recognizes where adversity lies for them yet has shown no signs of futile capitulation in any of their four matches. CONSOLATION!

Finally, to the myriads of officials on the day – THANK YOU.
