CW Season Concludes

CW opened the women’s Premier match against Westshore on Saturday with good energy and numerous recycles in the red zone.  Probes from Edwards-Challenger and Skakun might have been productive, yet only a penalty was earned for first blood.  From there on in it was pretty much a West Side Story, leading 22 – 13 at the interval with four tries.

The second stanza saw the hosts post a further six tallies to be good value for the win, with the word “close” never to be the case and the final score, 61 – 28, probably a fair indication of the disparity on this day.  The match was well-officiated but a ten try to three romp was not that difficult.  Still, there is no love lost between these two teams with too many unnecessary “niggles” observed.  Thanks to the officials.

In summary, Westshore was the fastest with the mostest, and all ball carriers ran good lines aggressively.  I give #8, Emily Findlay my W – 0 – M.  In the backs, former National squad player, Myer Addai was a handful, capably supported by Vanessa Chiapetta, along with sharp service from Emile Sinclair.  Zoe Williams, off the pines, was also very visible.

For CW, FRF member, Josie Anzai logged the complete eighty.  Marina Skakun, and Alex Motherwell in the pack, also earned their oats.  From the backs, Emily Currey did a ton of work, often sprung by good service from Samek and Anderton-Teasdale.  Rumor winds whisper that a trio of senior players are off to various corners of the globe.  If that includes you, then good luck, and our best wishes go with you.  Recruit hard for the cause and stay safe.  To Catie, and Ed, thank you for putting the best product we could on the field.

This pundit only has BCRU scores from the women’s Divvies match at Bayside, that being Bayside 49 – CW 5.  Good effort for the season, ladies.

The men’s First Division report comes from a sage on the sideline.  Evidently the Divvies were "into it" from the get-go, earning an edge of supremacy but not crossing the try line.  The set scrum provided front foot ball, so one wonders why the sage found it necessary to report ill-conceived kicking, often forfeiting possession.  It was close at the half with the Norse holding a 10 – 5 edge. (Ed. An old coaching mantra of mine was “if you can run and pass, keep your boots on the grass”!)

Obviously, the plot disintegrated and UVic’s speed won the day for a final, 36 - 15.  Hopefully, the opposition serves the Norse well as they move on.

And thus, the curtain falls on this season. Thanks to all of our team managers and AT crew. Congratulations to the winners and to all semi-finalists.
