Monday's Musings

RUGBY RETURNS
Although the weather generally cooperated it was still an obvious factor in the early going for CW Women on Saturday. During these early stages, whether it was weather, nerves or pressure CW had the “dropsies”. Although, in some phases, e.g. lineout, they were disruptive, but no advantage was gained. Westshore were very active at the breakdown and the play see-sawed as both teams sought to gain territory with the boot. Westshore sprung #10, Chiapetta and speedy winger, Poetker, in the first quarter to open their score. Following their brace both teams exhibited stifling and committed defense with Westshore having the edge. CW finally maintained some phase play in the red zone, but they were denied. Westshore got out of jail with another lengthy, individual try and a 22 – 0 lead at the half.
The second stanza saw some fifteen minutes of scoreless play before a lengthy series of CW retentions was denied. When possession was regained, the ball went to Poetker again for her brace and what might have been adjudged, a fourteen-point swing. Westshore continued their superiority with a final pair of tries for a total six pack and 43 – 0 scoreline. Arguably, this was not a totally accurate reflection of the play.
For Westshore, I give #8, Courtney Sims, W-o-M. She carried well and was very visible in the loose. For CW, the forward pack was good value and held their own. Worthy mention to Zodichi, off the bench. As usual, Hill-Huse, playing in the centers on this day, worked hard amongst a very youthful backline.
