Monday's Musings
CW's cloud bursts in Cowichan. The ball proves elusive in inclement weather and against a fired-up opposition.
Today's notes come from our Sage on the sideline.
Action started with a victory for Cowichan women's Div. 2 team over CW, 45 - 15. Coaches report that despite a sizeable differential, all players are on the improve.
In the men's Divvies match, CW opened the scoring but Cowichan responded in spades to lead comfortably 29 - 12 at the half. The Piggies had plenty of possession and ran the ball with good intent. Their organisation was a tribute to sound coaching and they came to the fray with a good strategy. Final score was 50 - 19. Well done, Cowichan. It is a credit to Island teams that our "single team clubs" - Port Alberni, Nanaimo and Cowichan are all off to a good start with Cowichan now being 2 - 1. The Tricolors share the basement with Abbotsford, so there is much to be done. There will be an opportunity next Saturday against the Norsemen (1 - 2) @ UVic.
The main game saw the heavens open, yet for the most part, the surface held. Thanks to the groundskeepers. The Pride managed a brace of tries running the ball with intent and looking far from the side that had lost 24 - 60 to UBC Ravens last week. Full credit to coaches Mack & Bydens, getting this group of sizeable and fit young men to the formidable outfit they should be at all times. The Pride moved to a deserving 19 - 5 score at the interval.
The second half was more of the same, the Pride attacking in waves that could not be stemmed, a task which became overwhelming, as pressure also caused CW handling errors and on the day, scrums were certainly not the desired outcome for Ceedub. So, it was all somewhat disappointing when the score showed 38 - 5 at full time. One can be sure there was much learned in this exercise and with additions still to come, things will get tighter and tougher. Still, a 2 - 1 record to open the season against three comprehensive teams is something the boys will take. They will enjoy a bye next week, with Islanders and Divvies both in action.
