Yak is Back!

Canada’s senior men’s head coach Mark Anscombe has named a 26-man Canada ‘A’ team that will tour the UK next month. Canada will face off against Greene King IPA Championship club Doncaster (August 20th) as well as Pro 12 side Ulster ((August 26th).

“We’re looking to develop our player depth on this tour,” Anscombe said. “We want to see if the players that played well during the Canadian Rugby Championships can step up and play at a higher level.”

The squad features 11 players who have test caps to their name in Kyle Baillie, Nanyak Dala, Matt Heaton, Phil Mackenzie, Gordon McRorie, Dan Moor, Pat Parfrey, Benoit Piffero, Mozac Samson, Brock Staller and Jordan Wilson-Ross. The rest of the squad is comprised of some of Canada’s finest young talent in Lucas Albornoz, Admir Cejvanovic, Peter Houlihan, Daniel Joyce, Conor Keys, Ryan Kotlewski, Ben LeSage, Kainoa Lloyd, Anthony Luca, Alex Mascott, Cody McClary, Aidan McMullan, Ollie Nott, Robbie Povey and Adrian Wadden. “We want to see how these players work under pressure,” Anscombe said. “Are they capable of going up to the next level and playing international rugby?”

The squad is comprised of players from all four CRC teams — the Ontario Blues, Prairie Wolf Pack, Atlantic Rock and BC Bears — as the tournament acts as the key pathway to Canada’s senior men’s team and for player development. The Blues claimed its fifth MacTier Cup last weekend after edging out the Wolf Pack by one point. Canada’s senior team is coming off of June’s RISEAsOne Summer Series where they defeated Russia but were narrowly beaten by Italy and Japan. Later this year, Canada will travel to the UK again to face Ireland with two further games still to be confirmed.

CW congratulates ALL players but particularly those that have worn the Tricolour in recent times - Nanyak Dala and Mozac Samson.

A few words from 'The Don'.
Greetings CW Rugby Fans / Supporters / Players / Parents - I hope everyone is enjoying a wonderful and relaxing summer. With the Olympics nearly upon us, and summer representative rugby well underway, you may already or soon have some rugby in your life! But thoughts will of course turn to CW rugby for all of us, as September approaches! This e-newsletter is to make everyone aware of a few critical facts and dates regarding our upcoming rugby season.

#1) Registration is open! The registration link on our web-site cwrugby.com is now live and will accept player and coach registrations. Coach registrations are fully refunded by the club, but are a necessary part of the club’s insurance. We hope that EVERYONE who plans to play CW this fall is fully registered by September 10th, 2016 (the earlier the better).

#2) September 10th (Saturday) will be a Gala Opening for All Ages at Windsor Park. Starting at 10 a.m. and running all day, we hope you will drop in when you can. Look for more details on our web-site but there will be touch rugby and flag rugby games, skills competitions, rugby golf, full games to watch, a BBQ, ice cream, even a beer tent for the non-participants.…. as well as on-site registration (for those who have not yet registered online). We hope to fill Windsor park with players and supporters of all ages, as we celebrate the start of the CW fall rugby in style!!!!

#3) Men’s Program changes: You may have seen our new Head Coach, Scott Manning, who was announced on the web-site in early July. We are also pleased to have returning CW coaches Chris May, Roger Robinson, Noa Molia, and Gord Kehoe, who will be joined by Pro Rugby and Canadian International veteran Ray Barkwill, who will make his premiership coaching debut with CW. We are all excited to be working with this group of coaches who look to energize an exciting young group of CW players.

Thank you all for your interest and commitment to CW rugby. I look forward to seeing you on September 10th and on the sidelines thereafter. We are ALWAYS looking for volunteers to help us run this organization, if you have interest in participating at any level: coach, manager, volunteer, executive member, sponsor….please read on and do come speak with me or any member of the current coaching staff or executive to learn more about where you may be able to help out.
