PATHWAY TO THE TOP ECHELON
TRANSATLANTIC U20 QUAD SERIES
Today we applaud the success of the NSWT U20’s who recently completed a sweep against the USA (23 – 10), England (36 – 33), and Wales (53 – 17). This is in stark contrast to the recent efforts of their male counterparts. One could surmise that the talent level is equally available, but there must be a difference in the programs. One member from CW and currently, UBC, Jesse Knaggs, has followed a developmental pathway to this pinnacle. We also congratulate Adia Pye who was a team member and has been with the club during her age grade years.
“Pathway” is a term often used on this site, and indeed, “it takes a village”. Other current CW athletes who come to mind are Sophie de Goede, Caroline Crossley, Jack Carson and Lockie Kratz. Following is a photographic timeline of Jesse’s pathway.
1.) Introduction to the game, with sister Jamie, as a Mini player. Coached by dad, Ed, (Canadian International), at Windsor Park (2011). 2.) Dad sets the example of lineout play Vs Caps. 3.) Form replicated by Jesse in BC Age Grade Rep play. 4.) Jesse in driving support as a Canadian International
THE PATHWAY CONTINUES
The following young men and ladies are off with BC’s U19 teams to play The Rock (Atlantic), Quebec, Ontario and Alberta next week at the National Championships. These players played as U18’s (and some, younger), with Ceedub and a number are already enrolled at university. We wish them and their teammates well as they pursue their rugby pathways.
U19 WOMEN: Caitlin Pearce, Gwen King, Hana Veysi, Piper Jorgenson and Sadie Schneider.
U19 MEN: Annan McAllister, Noah Kynaston, Ty Driscoll and Spencer Cotie.
GO, YOU GOOD THINGS!
PARIS OLYMPICS
An effort to be proud of. It was a textbook clinic of committed defense that brought home the bacon for the women against Fiji. Unfortunately, a NZ team, firing on all sixes put their stamp on Canada and so their post-pool play rested on the outcome of their match against China, a very competent combination. It was very early this morning I caught the victory over China as Canada seeks a podium finish. Go, Canada, go!
CW IN NZ
This past weekend saw CW Junior, Antonio Corbin (in kit), playing for Prebbleton, in the Ellesmere Union finals NZ. Antonio has played a good portion of the season with the Prebbleton club, near Canterbury. Marshall Stove’s dad, Steve managed to get back home to see Antonio in action.
FOOTNOTE – The NZ Buckley Clan name was brought up in conversation with the Ruggernut and the Casey Dunning Clan this past weekend. CW has had a great relationship with Kiwis, Nathan, Matt and Paul Buckley, as well as players from the Nelson Bay area, (NSW), Casey’s home club. Casey represented Canada during his three seasons with CW, all great history!
