Monday's Musings on Tuesday!

This past weekend saw a mixed bag of CW results. There was heaps of exciting action at the House of Windsor with all three women’s teams on show. Diz 2 opened the day against UBC “1/Lightening”. This Varsity supposed, third team showed well with a lopsided victory. As has been the case with this Tricolor group, it was reported that there was no lack of enthusiasm or bravery.
The Div 1 contest was between United and CW. United presented as a well-organized group going through their patterns with discipline and good skill. CW did manage to get on the scoreboard late in the game with a try from Avalon Crawford and a 5 – 31 final score. United hold their place solidly in the middle of the league table with a 4 – 4 record for fifth place.
Finally, to the Match – of – the – Day. The UBC “2” team is an enigma to BC rugby watchers! (More to follow). This match was a very physical and entertaining game with a good gallery of fans, quite vocal with their support. CW took control early with two quick, converted tries. With the forward pack’s effectiveness, a front-foot platform was provided for the backs to show their heels. At the half, CW 28 – UBC 5.
To summarize, the complete CW squad was committed to defense with solid, open-field tackles with Emily Currey prominent and impregnable red zone defense for a 47 – 12 victory.
MVP Forwards – Marina Skakun : MVP Backs – Emily Currey. Try scorers; Samek, Hilton, Garcia-Perdomo-Maxwell, King, and Skakun (2). Goals: Remee Brown (6)
CW continues to beat the drums as the only club in the Province that fields three senior women’s teams.
PUNDIT’S PICKLE – UBC Boondoggle?
As I was not present at the game, I have sought to establish the damage the results did to the League Ladder. BCRU website for TABLES for Premier, Division 1, and Division 2 Women show some confusing results which could easily bring the pundit to the conclusion that there is a UBC boondoggle going on! There is no UBC Div 2 team on the ladder, yet UBC “2” defeated Seattle RFC. In Premier competition, UBC “1” succumbed to CW. The Premier Ladder shows the UBC “2” team at 4 – 0 – 1, atop the table and Thunderbirds “1” in the cellar at 0 – 0 – 1. I have been told that UBC, akin to the Men’s Pride, will not be playing in the playoffs, yet games against them count in points total for clubs. On top of all this there are some times UBC plays some parts of the season and some not, when their Varsity season leads to a National Championship in XV’s (pre-Xmas) and VII’s (post-Xmas). Now, if you can follow all of this, you are a better person than I, Gunga Din! This is one person’s opinion, but there always seems to be some controversy with the BCRU. I do not wish to be overly critical of the governing body, but clarification would be useful.

Colts on Debut
The men were in Vancouver and our newly minted Colts, basically a U23 selection, were on debut against a similar group from the Meralomas club. The scoreline indicated a close tussle with plenty of tries scored. CW came out on top, 34 – 27.
CW’s Premier men were crosstown at Jericho Park taking on the undefeated, league-leading Ravens. This pundit picked up a few fragments, post-game. A Raven’s squad containing a smattering of accents has jelled onto an extremely competent and talented team. They opened this day with two quick, early tries. CW managed to settle and strike back with a brace and had the score at 21 – 10 with the interval in sight. As so often happens in rugby, a late try was scored and the gulf was insurmountable. Some 42 points were added by the hosts in the second stanza. CW will have an opportunity to shake this off next Saturday when they face cellar-dwellers, James Bay at The Mac.
