CW vs Nanaimo - 1st Division mens - game report

A grand day was had Saturday September 12/15 as both CW Women’s and Men’s Div 1 team traveled together by bus to Nanaimo for two games.

The Women did well with a win on their first outing supported by a squad of 16 under the guidance of team Coaches. See their game day summary on this CW Website.

The Div 1 Men also put in a solid performance but didn’t seal the deal and finished the match 24 to 38 in favour of Nanaimo Hornets. (at the half Nanaimo 21 CW 14) Coming away with a bonus point for 4 good tries was a partial reward for a group of 90% new faces, each of whom put in a solid days work.
Nanaimo picked CW #10 Ian Hickman and CW #8 Alek Silzer as men of the match, much to the loud applause of all in attendance. Silzer is raw, stuck in and fearless……Hickman was poised at 10 with a quick read of the flow along with an accurate boot during the run of play. Two solid new players for CW in a team of many new and solid lads.

In the post match CW acknowledge the great job done by the officials especially ''man in the middle'' Kevin Smith. The Ref throughout the game showed he understood it was a first game, early in the season, and a lot of rust had to come off the flow of play. While enforcing the Laws as always, support for the lads and encouragement throughout was his approach….rather than a harsh use of the whistle and ‘’cards’’. Many thanks to all three officials.
In the result a good match was seen by a very large crowd…..well done to the supporters at Nanaimo and a million thanks to the CW supporters who attended. Great stuff all round!
After the usual grand hosting by the Hornets it was onto the bus with the lads and lassies. A good trip back with songs and silliness a’plenty. The men and women traveling together and supporting each other was a new experience for young and old……it all felt good and ‘’right’’ for CW and those involved. The fun continued at the Temple on Discovery Street…..with lots of banter about the coming weekend when the Women, Div1 Men and Premier Men will travel to the Westshore to play (11:30am, 1 and 2:30 pm) the recently relocated Velox Club.
Till then….
