Castaway Wanderers Kickoff Weekend - Saturday, September 13

Oak Bay – The BC Premiership Rugby season kicks off Saturday, September 13th including a hometown match-up between two teams with a lot to prove.  Premiership Division regulars, Castaway Wanderers are putting last season’s semi-final exit vs. James Bay Athletic Association behind them and looking for a rebound season back at the top of the table. Velox, the defending Vancouver Island Rugby Union Champions, are eager to prove they are ready to compete with the Premiership teams with their goal being a return to the top tier of B.C. rugby competition.

Castaway Wanderers have many new fresh faces hitting the pitch and donning the tri-colours as injuries, professional contracts and team Canada commitments have depleted the ranks. Returnee John Braddock, the club's 2013-2014 Player of the Year and new team captain, will bring some much needed leadership and toughness to the ranks while the emergence of some new talent keeps the expectation solely on the team competing for the Barnard Cup.

"We expect the usual period of adjustment as we confirm a playing roster for the first half of the season,” said head coach Ian Hyde-Lay. There are some big holes to fill given the retirement of former national player Ander Monro and a serious knee injury to Matt Buckley but some key returnees and new faces in the ranks give cause for optimism."

First division match kicks off at 1pm, followed by the Premier match at 2:45pm this Saturday, September 13th at Windsor Park in Oak Bay (2451 Windsor Rd). There will be no charge at the gate, a small token by Castaway Wanderers to thank current supporters and encourage new fans to come out and enjoy the entertainment.

“Castaway Wanderers is looking to draw more players and fans to our sport as many people in Victoria aren’t familiar with Rugby and don’t realize the top level sporting entertainment available right outside their doorstep,” said Don Swainson, President of Castaway Wanderers RFC. B.C. Premiership rugby is the best in Canada and we encourage folks to come down to Windsor Park for the home-opener on Saturday and experience first-hand what it’s all about.”

Mini and girls players will be providing half-time entertainment and Fat daddy’s BBQ will be on site offering food service. Beer and other beverages will also be available for purchase.
