BITS & PIECES

CANADA NSMT 16 - USA 9.  (FRF in action - Tieds and Hubie at work.) Canada Senior Mens Team defeated USA in the opener of the Pacific Nations Cup today in Edmonton.  Conditions were inclement as the boot of Connor Braid accounted for eleven points and Canada's John Moonlight scored the sole try.  Kudos to the FRF which had a "heavy"  CW flavor, featuring starters Ray Barkwill, Hubert Bydens and from the pines, Andrew Tiedeman, Ryan Hamilton and Doug Woolridge.  All of these boys have worn the Tricolors either this past season or last year.  Ciaran Hearn also started and Nanyak Dala rode the pines.  CW congratulates Team Canada on a solid win. Canada's next International is against Fiji on June 5th in Toronto whilst the USA will play Tonga, winners over Japan 27-17.

CANADA U20's ROLL.  CW offers best wishes to the Canadian Mens U20's who have left for the JWRT taking place in Chile.  There are high hopes for this squad to improve on their twelfth place at the last competition.  CW is especially proud of Ontario's Lucas Hammond who has played for the club during the past two seasons and will have a lot of faith placed in him to produce and serve as a key catalyst to an experienced backline.  We commiserate with Macbryon Bos who had selectors thinking until the last minute with some good trials and training efforts.  The team will be skippered by Cowichan and UVic's, Pat Kay. The boys open their campaign against Tonga on May 26th.

OAK BAY HS BARBS WIN HOWARD RUSSELL CUP.  OBHS and CW Junior, Connor McDiarmid streaks away from a Mt Doug tackler.  Last week The Barbs won yet another Island HS Championship, defeating the much vaunted and talented, football pedigreed Rams, 39 - 17. The backbone of the Barbs team are young men who have received tutelege at CW with their Junior rugby and finished at the Murray Allen Factory.  Connor and Tyler Mc Diarmid, James Carson, Sam Brydon, Morgan Tate, Daniel O'Flynn, Jack Nyren, Dave Hanna, Oli Spratt, Braonain Masterton (injured) and Skipper, Evan Cambridge are an experienced group who have been together since their Mini Rugby days.  The Barbs opened their BCHS Championship campaign with a 20 - 5 win over Carson Graham on the weekend and now move to Vancouver with high hopes, despite perhaps what may be deemed an underated seeding.  Ceedub wishes y'all, well.  Go, Barbs, go!
