Vikes Vanquished

The opening ten minutes featured CW pressure from Barkwill, Tieds and Kleeberger but UVic ‘D’ held, UVic had runs from their backs but at twelve minutes it went terribly wrong when Dingwall pinched an overthrown line out ball from the students and fed Buckley, with Kleeberger on his shoulder for first blood. The students were not daunted and responded with some good phases in the CW 22 and after five recycles, earned a five meter scrum. Nought came of the effort and in fact it was Horton who burst away for forty meters, on to Monro who gave a side-stepping clinic, jinking hugely around five defenders and fed Riley Ilnicki for an “against the grain” tally. (10 – 0).

Near 24 minutes after some broken play, CW drove a lineout maul, the ball was fed to Buckley who superbly picked it off his toes and fed Fuli who scored under the posts, 17 – 0. UVic continued to show brave opposition and was duly rewarded when Pat Kay crossed for the try. CW had the final say when quick blind side ball and a Dingwall break, saw him feed Kleeberger and Jake Ilnicki scored the bonus tally and the half ended.

It was a long second half for the Visitors. Five tries were scored by the hosts, interspersed with a late going, UVic try after Kay, blocked a grubber and we think it was Stewart who was rewarded with the try. CW scorers were; Horton, Barkwill, Kleeberger for his brace, Northcott and Dingwall. The game lost considerable structure as CW subbed liberally however all subs did try to stick to the knitting and it was good exposure for the coming weeks. Other second half highlights included the Captain, running rampant, Chad Northcott providing some sheer magic with his trickery with ball in hand, fake dummies, passing to himself, fake kicks, genius…some said “How does he do it?” The passing and catching of the backs and their hard running was a joy to behold. Final score 53 – 12.

Again, kudos to the students for their brave opposition, they stuck to their pattern when they had possession but were often foiled with heavy tackles and were no match when it came to the grunt work. Thanks to ref, Mike Jones who handled the proceedings suitably, unfortunately, having to award a number of penalties against UVic due to physical domination by the Hosts. So, for Ceedub, another step has been taken and it’s down to five weeks. Lomas visit this coming Saturday and although it may seem easy to feel sorry for their plight, it will not be a club that can be taken lightly as another bonus point should be there for the taking.
