2008 Millfield Festival Report

The Millfield Festival is the premiere rugby event of the year for European and North American U17 national rugby teams.  Hosted by Millfield School in the pretty little town of Street, England, the festival drew the nations of Scotland, Wales, France, England, Portugal, Romania, the USA and Canada to its competition.

Helping represent the Canadian squad were three CW players, Mike Fuailefau (outside centre), John Humphries (lock) and Beau Parker (fullback).  The first match for the Canadians presented no problems as they cruised to a 48 - 0 victory over the Romanians.  The third match was harder fought and the Portuguese side refused to give up in their 25 to 12 loss to the Canadians.  Mike had opened the scoring against the Portuguese with a first half try.  It was the second match pitting the fast-footed and quick thinking French side that was to be the real test.  From the starting whistle, the Canadians leapt into action.  With Johnny and the forwards tackling hard and winning possession; with Mike and the backs running the ball with conviction and zipping it wide by opportunity or by design, Beau was dealt consistently good hands to play and he did not disappoint.  Beau scored three tries “…to put on a dominant first-half display; he then scored his fourth in the second half to seal the win.” (Rugby Canada News)  Without the wonderful defensive play and consistent tackling by the CW lads and their teammates, their terrific offence alone would not have been enough against this top-notch French team.  The final score was 38 to 15 for Canada.

At tournament end, Canada stood as the only unbeaten team and was unmatched in most points scored and fewest points allowed.  Once again, the Castaway Wanderers RFC has reason to be proud of their players.  In their on and off field relations with the other competitors and with the townsfolk of Street, they were wonderful ambassadors not just of Canadian rugby, but of the ideals that their country and their club stand for.
