Wednesday's Ruck & Maul

Oh to be……

……………a fly on the wall. The upcoming BCRU AGM, June 21st will see as its central issue debate and voting on the following, very cleverly, word-smithed motion, relating to the inclusion of Seattle Saracens in the CDI Premier League for the 2015/16 season.  The gist of the motion being, that to be eligible for full BCRU membership a club, must have “a permanent B.C. mailing address…….its home field (or able to play its home matches) in B.C.” and further, “a permanent hosting facility located in B.C.” blah, blah.

One can picture an army of Seattle barristers (remunerated by London Sarries dollars), arriving at the Sandman Hotel to do battle on this one! One posted American reaction; “Imagine the Toronto Blue Jays qualifying for the Series, and then Major League Baseball trying to kick them out. There would be howling (justifiably) in the provinces about such a naive, insular, self-centered, entitled, anti-sportsman, lousy-neighbor punkish stunt by the Americans…..” being just part of the reaction.

Our own sage on the side, Paul Shepherd, offered a pov agreed with by this pundit; “I hope this is the BCRU trying to leverage the mainland clubs into reconsidering their positions regarding player eligibility. Otherwise it seems weak.”  Club personnel across the province will be gathering ere to and there will no doubt, be much gnashing and gnarling to arrive at a club position.

On the playing front, interesting to read from B.C. Rugby News rather than Rugby Canada website – (good sleuthing, Mark), a long list of players “in camp” – a veritable who’s who, training for selection for the upcoming North American regional sevens playoff to see who will be added to the Olympics Pool.  Said playoff will take place on June 13/14th in North Carolina.

The following (pending fitness), are quoted to be training this week at Langford; Tyler Ardron, Connor Braid, Admir Cejvanovic, Justin Douglas, Sean Duke, Matt Evans, Mike Fuialefau, Lucas Hammond, Jeff Hassler, Ciaran Hearn, Harry Jones, Pat Kay, Phil Mack, John Moonlight, Matt Mullins, Pat Parfrey, Taylor Paris, Mike Scholz, Conor Trainor, Liam Underwood, Sean White, Jordan Wilson-Ross, Adam Zaruba.  This answers the question as to who might be eligible for Rio that many have tossed around since the end of the IRB series.  Try picking twelve from this bunch of speedsters and play-makers.  Go, Canada!

That’s all he wrote for today.  The Ruggernut.
