Vancouver Island - A Big Game

B.C. Bears' Sean Ferguson on the fly.

B.C. Bears go into action against Ontario Blues this coming Friday evening at Westshore Stadium, 7:30 k.o.  It is unknown at this time if any NSMT players will be on show, so this site will bring selection details as soon as we know.  The Bears dropped their opener against The Wolf Pack who, in turn lost their second match on the weekend to The Rock, 14 - 16.  The Bears had a "hit out" against Burnaby on the weekend to sharpen up, after a generally, unsatisfactory start to the campaign.

Coach's comments; "It was a definite improvement from the game against the Wolf Pack with regards to continuity and our error rate was much lower," said BC Bears head coach Jim Dixon. "We still have a few things to iron out but I'm glad we had the opportunity and it was important for the guys to have more time playing together."

Dixon was impressed by a number of players who put their hands up for selection including back rowers Dustin Dobravsky (UVic Vikes) and Chris Chalmers (Abbotsford RFC). Luke Campbell (UVic Vikes) who has yet to feature for the Bears in CRC action also made a strong impression on the coaching staff.

"Henry Recinos (Vancouver Rowing Club) and Matt Buckley (Castaway Wanderers) also had good games on Saturday and really took advantage of the opportunities in front of them," added Dixon.

Of course, Burnaby was not the opposition the Wolf Pack was but we look for better stuff this weekend.  The Bears play a weekend "double-header" as they take on The Rock on Monday, same location, 4:45 k.o.  What better way to ease into the new season with a couple of good rugby games on a long weekend??  We'll see you there.  Victoria and West Coast fans, need to make a showing to Rugby Canada that we are a worthy fan base to support the "big matches".
