Unsung Hero - On The Field

This week’s hero is the Captain of The Ones, Jacob “Chips” Lamb.  Jacob is a hard, uncompromising man who leads by his deeds. Jacob gave away his age to CW – 33. He and his dad run Engarde Trucking Co.  He is a hometown boy, becoming a rarity with the two Premier clubs in Victoria and he attended Spectrum High School.

He started playing rugby at Margaret Jenkins Elementary School with CW’s co-founder of Mini Rugby, Peter Gallagher.  Jake played all through Jr. High and High School.  After graduation, he took some time away from the sport, travelling and checking out the new world and it was just six seasons back when he returned to rugby with The Tricolors.  CW is the only senior club he has played for and he has been positioned in the lock or back row spot, with his favorite position being #8.  Jacob’s natural leadership skills soon surfaced and it was not long before he was leading the boys in the fray.

Jacob quotes; “No doubt as to who has had the greatest influence on my rugby career and that is Noah Molia.  Noah has been friend, mentor and fan throughout these six seasons.”  He continues; “I have been fortunate to have had two major highlights during these six years, those being a V.I.R.U. First Division title four years ago, beating out Nanaimo in a hard fought match and a B.C. First Division Ceili’s Cup Championship three years ago, defeating Meralomas.

Jacob’s main rugby goal; “I’d love to get a Tour going to Argentina in 2015”.  Commendable and knowing Chipsy’s work ethic, it would not surprise this writer if this was to eventuate, maybe starting with this article! He adds, “the other ( as I move off the pitch), is to continue the growth of the club culture and brotherhood that CW has to offer.  I have met my best friends and been on the greatest trip, the 2011 RWC, through rugby. Our last question to Jacob was the inevitable, “How did you get your nickname?”  “It was given to me by Sipili Molia.  I used to go straight from work to training and I drove for Old Dutch Foods at the time.  I would always give the chaps a ride home in the back of the truck and give away any freebies I had!”  ‘onya, Chipsy!

Jacob has been a driver this season to pass along his “old school” work ethic and step by step, things are coming around.  A true, blue collar guy – Jacob Lamb.
